Behaviour home visit

Most dogs exhibit their unwanted behaviour in or around their home so a home visit is most beneficial. This will give me the opportunity to observe the dog’s environment as this often has an influence on the dog problems.

The Consultation

We like to meet all members of the household, not only to obtain their individual opinions but that they hear my advice first hand and we may answer any questions which they have regarding the dog’s problems. We also look into the dog’s diet and advise accordingly.

We discuss the main problem(s)

We then observe and interact with the dog which will enable us to find the cause of the dog problems. This is usually carried out in the garden or just outside the home. If the dog problems occur in public places where the dog is usually walked then it is beneficial to go there. During this time we explain how or why the dog problems have arisen, the cause and the chances of realistically modifying the behaviour. Any technique we utilise will be explained and taught so the owner can continue with confidence once my visit is completed.

Many dog problems become deep seated so we provide a workable plan to try to overcome this problem. Dog behaviours are like habits and may take a little time to eradicate completely. We also supply written information along with further advice which gives a full, easy to read explanation regarding how dogs learn, why they do what they do, how they see us, how to correct a dog’s behaviour and and how to train a dog quickly and successfully. You will also receive a full written report.

In addition we will supply twelve months follow up advice for any future dog problem that may arise. Most cases require one visit which usually lasts around 3 to four hours.

In very deep seated dog problems it may be necessary for follow up sessions which we offer on an hourly basis.

A recent dog behaviour home visit

We received an anxious call from Yvonne the owner of a Beagle named Merlin. We had successfully treated her son’s dog which had behavioural problems and he recommended Yvonne to contact us. “Merlin is a nightmare” said Yvonne.  “He has chewed the fridge door seals and damaged numerous other things in my home. He barks if I leave him, pulls like mad on the lead and wants to attack anything we see on dog walks, including buses, cars and cyclists. He goes crazy if we see another dog. I cannot have visitors to my home because Merlin is too aggressive. I bought a large cage for him but he has damaged the bars attempting to get out”

Yvonne went on to explain, “ I had a lady behaviourist call last August. She listened to all of the problems and told me I must ignore the dog when ever it misbehaves!!! She told me that the dog repeated misbehaving because it drew my attention to it. She left a video for me to watch which I found useless. I was charged £150.00 to be told to

I called to see Yvonne at her home and listened to the full story. Merlin was shut into another room for ‘my safety’. I told Yvonne to put Merlin on a lead and take him into her garden. After a moment I entered the garden and witnessed Merlin’s aggression for myself. I took Merlin’s lead from Yvonne and asked her to stand by the back door. I applied my methods which allowed me to communicate with Merlin then performed some exercises with him to establish his response. My analysis indicated Merlin was nervous aggressive. I quickly established Merlin’s trust and respect and suggested we take him for a walk. During the walk I taught Yvonne to recognise the signs from Merlin’s body language which showed whether he was calm or was thinking of reacting to what he encountered.

It took just a few minutes and Merlin was walking nicely to heel, stopping whenever we stopped. Returning to the house I explained the causes for the unwanted behaviours and provided Yvonne with a program for her to implement to create a lsting change in Merlin. Yvonne rang me a few days later saying she is delighted with the turn around with Merlin's behaviour. The episodes of aggression and barking have disappeared. He is a joy to take out and walks nicely by her side.

ignore my dog, what a waste of money. It left me thinking that dog behaviourists could do nothing for Merlin and I considered taking him to the rescue centre but I was told they were full up and couldn’t take any more dogs. When my son recommended you I decided to take one more chance before parting with Merlin”.
